Staph infection information

Bad Bug (MRSA) Alert: Important Implications for Parents & Players

The headlines across the country and locally say it all. There is a new type of staph infection, MRSA, which has become increasingly prevalent in schools and athletic teams nationwide. If not recognized and treated immediately, MRSA infections have the potential for some very serious outcomes, including death.

Staph/MRSA infections look like an abscess, boil, ingrown hair or pimple. In soccer players they may result from an abrasion, turf burn or other open wound, and are spread by skin-to-skin contact. These infections may occur on any area of the body, including the face, extremities, buttocks, groin and pubic areas, and are usually red, swollen, painful, and may have drainage.

Because they tend to spread rapidly from person to person, preventing staph/MRSA infections is imperative. At home and elsewhere, those players with open wounds should not share soap, towels, razors or deodorant, and players should shower immediately following practice and games to avoid infection. On the field, players should be diligent about having their open wounds covered and protected completely, and should get into the habit of checking for open wounds on a regular basis.

Given the potential seriousness of staph/MRSA infections, and the fact that I have already seen a player this season with a serious infection, it is imperative that any suspected staph/MRSA infection be seen by a physician immediately. Failure to do so may result in dire consequences.

Uniform Shorts and Borrowed Uniforms

Tonight I will be passing out temporary shorts from Eurosport for those players that have not received their new uniform shorts. These are to be used until the custom shorts are ready.

Thank you to the families that loaned us uniforms for the U-13 team. I am thrilled that we had enough for all the new players on Palmer's team. I will be getting them back from players tomorrow night and returning them to you on Wednesday.

Need to borrow uniforms

Good Morning everyone!

I am wondering if anyone will loan us their Adult Medium uniform for the weekend of Aug. 28th and 29th. Our team does not have any games that weekend. Our younger son's team (U13 Black) has at least 5 players that need uniforms in order to play in the NASA soccer tournament.

I am open to using the old style of uniform if I can not get enough of the new style.

Please email me and let me know if you would be willing to loan your uniform to us. I will be the one responsible for getting it returned to you.

I have been advised that we will be using Miller Field this fall for training. (For our new players, if you stand at the clubhouse looking at the fields, Miller is located to your right. Spencer field is the far field, and Miller is the one closer to the clubhouse.)

Also, I have a release form that must be signed by a parent for each player for the AFC tournament this weekend. I will be at practice tonight to collect signatures. Please make sure you stop and see me this evening.

Summer training

Parents:

Dave would like to start summer training next week. Before we proceed, I must hear from everyone about availability for the sessions.

We will have a Monday - Wednesday schedule, and sessions will run from 6:30 to 8pm. We will have 6 sessions: July 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th and 28th. (Team camp starts the week of August 2nd, with regular season practice starting the following week.)

Summer sessions will be $10 each.

We intend to use Crossroads for our sessions, however I am waiting for authorization from the club to use the field.

Please contact me no later than Wednesday this week to advise of your son's availability for the summer sessions.

If you are ordering a new uniform or any parts/pieces please fill out the attached form and bring it with a check to signing night. Checks for uniforms need to be made out to GSA 97 Phoenix Black.

You can order backpacks, extra socks, and warm up suits using the same form. We will want to get the initial order in this week, but we can place another order in the fall if needed.

If you have any trouble completing the form please let me know. It will automatically figure the cost and shipping and give you a total.

Wednesday v. Ambush - Kit color

Our match is scheduled for 7:30pm on Field 1, which is the turf field we played on last time. Please plan to arrive at 7:00 to allow adequate warmup time, or even a bit earlier if you can manage.

We will wear a FULL WHITE kit. Please make sure to bring your red jersey, however, as I have not received an email response from the Ambush manager confirming colors.

The address for the park is 4780 Webb Bridge Road, Alpharetta GA, 30005.

Given the amount of traffic after 5 pm during the week, it will certainly be best to avoid taking Georgia 400, and instead travel north on Pleasant Hill Road (by Gwinnett Place Mall), which turns into State Bridge Road at the Fulton County line. After 4.5 miles on State Bridge, turn right on Kimball Bridge Road. Turn left on to Webb Bridge Way and then right on Webb Bridge Road, and the park will be on your left.

Tournament job assignments

My apologies for bombarding everyone today with emails, however the schedule is busy with the GSA tournament and the Ambush reschedule next week.

The schedule for tournament jobs has us working as field marshals and at the scoring/t-shirt table in 60 minute shifts.

I have tried to schedule everyone to avoid other conflicts with siblings playing at different times and locations. I expect someone will have a conflict, however, and I apologize in advance if that is the case.

If you wish to change shifts with someone, please contact them directly and make the arrangements. I will not make the changes unless both parties agree to the change.

When you arrive for your shift, come to the venue director's tent, which is normally located by the lower fields, and check in with the venue director on duty. I will be working with Charles Norton and Mark Adamczyk as venue directors throughout the weekend.

For Shanks and Thomas - at Livsey on Sunday - look for the field marshal on duty and obtain the vest. No need to come to Henderson to check in.

I will be your primary contact for any issues over the weekend. Use my cell number (404-274-6512) as a contact.

Volunteer duties at GSA Supercup

I have just received the spreadsheet from GSA regarding the blocks of time we will need to cover as volunteers during the Supercup, and will be putting together an assignment list this evening. Everyone will have a shift, which will last 45 minutes, or 60 minutes at the most.

Fortunately, most of our jobs are at Henderson (some are at Livsey, on the other side of the park), and will involve acting as field marshall - so even if your assignment falls during our matches, you'll still be able to watch the game.

I have been asked to work with Charles Norton and Mark Adamczyk as venue director at Henderson, so when you report for shift, one of us will be there to direct traffic.

It's fairly painless, and a large part of what makes our tournament run smoothly. I thank everyone in advance!

I apologize for the late notice for training, however the Ambush game remained up in the air.

The Ambush match will be rescheduled at 7:30 pm for either Tuesday or Wednesday next week. I am trading emails with Georgia Soccer and the Ambush manager to finalize details.

I need to hear from everyone immediately regarding availability for both of these days next week. As everyone knows, this is a critical game for us, and we want to have a full squad available.

Our match is scheduled for 11am on Field 1, Lions Field, Clarkesville, GA.

Please note that Clarkesville is approximately 75 miles from GSA, so please allow adequate travel time to arrive by 10:30 am. I urge everyone to familiarize yourself with the map, directions and location of this field, as it can be tricky to find! If you can get to Clarkesville, you're 99% of the way there.

Directions:

Take I-85 North. At Suwanee, take the I-985 North exit toward Gainesville. At Gainesville, I-985 changes into GA 365. Continue North on GA 365. Exit at sign for GA 197 (Mt Airy/Clarkesville) Turn left onto GA 197 North at end of ramp. Follow GA 197 North to 4 way stop. Continue through. At a traffic light, GA 197 joins US 441 N (historic route). Continue through light. Follow US 441 N (historic route) through the Square in Clarkesville. Turn left at City Park sign (Mary Street). Lions Field is on the right.

Note: Approximately 50 yards after passing through the traffic light in the Clarkesville city Square, US 441 N (historic route) makes a sharp right. From this point Mary Street is the 3rd street on the left.

If you need directions in Clarkesville, ask for directions to: a) Lions Field b) the old Clarkesville Community Center (directly in front of Lions Field).

I have not received a response from AFU regarding kit colors for Friday's match.

We will plan to wear a FULL RED kit - however, please make sure your player has his white jersey available in the event we need to change. As the home team, we are responsible for changing colors if there is a conflict.

May Fees/ End of Year

May is the final month for monthly fees. They are due before the 10th. If everyone could pay them as soon as possible it would help me to close out the year. After all fees are collected and final expenses paid out, I will be able to figure out refund amounts.

Just a reminder so that you can plan for upcoming events. Tryouts are June 8th -10th. Signing night for the U-14 teams will be on June 22nd.

Bluesprings is approximately 20 miles from GSA, south of Loganville.

Directions: From GSA, take Hwy 78 East to Loganville. In Loganville, turn right onto Hwy 81 South. Go 3 1/2 miles and turn right at the traffic light onto Centerhill Church Rd. Go 1/4 mile, and turn left into Bluesprings Sports Ranch. Follow the dirt drive till you reach the parking lot on left.

We will be on Field 2.

Our upcoming schedule - important!

All:

I have had a few questions about the upcoming schedule, so I am posting this announcement to (hopefully) clear up any questions.

First, we have two matches this weekend:

Saturday at 3pm vs. CGSA at home.

Sunday at 3:30pm vs. Bluesprings at Bluesprings.

The following weekend, May 1-2, we will be playing in the AFU tournament. Schedules have not been posted, so our location and times for games are still unknown.

The weekend following the AFU tournament, we will have games on Friday, May 7th at 6:30pm at home vs. AFU, and Saturday, May 8th at 11am vs. NGSA in Clarkesville, which is in north Georgia.

Our final regular season game will be on Saturday, May 15th at 9am vs. Ambush in Alpharetta.

We will close the spring season in the GSA Super Cup tournament on May 22-23.

May games are not yet posted on the team website, however the calendar will be updated shortly. Please contact me if you have any questions about the schedule.

AFU has advised that they will not be able to field an adequate squad to play the match, and as it stands, we will be missing several of our players too.

Our match tomorrow vs. Cannons is at 1pm at Whitlock Park in Newnan. We will be on field 11.

Please try to arrive by 12:30 for warmup. Whitlock Park is approximately 45 miles from GSA, so plan accordingly.

Go south on I-85 to Newnan Exit(# 47)- Hwy. 34 / Bullsboro Drive.

Turn left at the exit red light and go approximately 1.5 miles through 4 red lights (you will pass Wal-Mart on the right, Home Depot shopping center on the left). The fourth red light will be at the Yamaha Manufacturing plant on the left and the fields are visible from the street on the left just after that. The next red light will be at a car dealership on your left and White Oak Professional Center on your right. Turn left at that light between the car dealership and the Quik Trip gas station.

There are two parking lots. The first lot has access to fields 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11.

Our match on Saturday against CFC Redstar is scheduled for 12 noon, in Columbus. We will be on field 6.

Note that our kit color will be slightly different than usual: WHITE jersey/WHITE shorts/RED socks. (This is the same kit we wore in Columbus in the fall. I'm superstitious.)

Dacula has contacted us and said that it is highly unlikely that the game will be played in the morning tomorrow due to field conditions. They are considering moving the game to a later start time.

I need everyone to email me and let me know if they are available for an afternoon game tomorrow. Dacula has not given me a specific time and I am not even sure that the game will be moved, but I need everyone to let me know their status.

Although it has not been posted on the Georgia Soccer calendar yet, please note that our May 2 game against Coweta Cannons has been moved up to Sunday, March 28th at 1pm.

It was necessary for us to move this match to allow us to play in the AFU tournament the weekend of May 1-2.

I have received several emails asking about our match against Columbus, which currently remains on the GSSA calendar for 3/6.

This match has been cancelled, and has been rescheduled for Saturday, 3/27 at noon in Columbus. GSSA contacted me by email this morning and advised that the GSSA calendar will be updated to reflect the change today or tomorrow. The March calendar on our team website has the correct information.

Our next match is Saturday, 3/13 at Dacula.

We will have a training session on Friday, starting at 6:45. Dave and I are assuming that the GSA complex will be open by that time, and this will be a good opportunity for our squad to have an additional session on grass ahead of the spring season.

And there's great news: Thanks to favorable results in the other matches today within our bracket, we are assured of making the final tomorrow afternoon regardless of the outcome of our Sunday morning match against AFU.

Concorde - URGENT - Location Changes!

I have learned that our locations have changed for our matches. Please note that the times have not changed, but we are no longer playing any games at Pinkneyville Park.

Our first match will be played at Ridgeview Middle School at 8am Saturday. We will wear ALL RED for this match. It will likely be at or near freezing at game time, and in the interest of avoiding injuries, please plan to arrive at 7:30 to allow the players an adequate chance to warm up.

These are directions to Ridgeview:

Take I-285 Westbound to exit #28, Peachtree Dunwoody Road. Turn left onto Peachtree Dunwoody and travel about 1-1⁄2 miles to South Trimble Road (if you see the large YMCA soccer complex at Peachtree Dunwoody and Windsor Parkway you have gone too far). Turn right onto South Trimble Road and travel about 1⁄2 mile to the first parking lot entrance at Ridgeview Middle School. Field is at the far end of the parking lot.

The address for Ridgeview Middle School is: 5340 Trimble Road NE, Atlanta, 30342.

Our second match on Saturday will be played at 1pm at Livsey Field, which is part of Henderson Park, in Tucker. (Everyone should be familiar with this park, since we played our last match of the fall season against Norcross at the TYSA fields.) We will wear ALL WHITE for this match.

Regular season schedule

Many of you have asked about the regular season schedule, which is to start on March 6th.

Georgia Soccer provided managers and coaches with a tentative schedule last week, which was very favorable to us regarding our matches away. Unfortunately, this schedule was replaced on Thursday with a new schedule, which added a team to Classic III, and was completely different from the first.

I received notice late last night from the U13 coordinator stating that there were some errors made to the second set of schedules. They have now been taken down, and I do not know when revised schedule will be released.

I am hopeful that we will have the schedule in the next few days for distribution.

If the bracket does not change, we will have a total of 11 regular season games.

Cobb Classic has been canceled.

I have received notice this afternoon that the Cobb Classic has been canceled due to weather and poor conditions.

2010 Cobb Classic Canceled by Cobb County Parks & Recreation

Marietta, GA – Cobb Futbol Club announced today that this year’s Adidas Cobb Classic has been cancelled due to a combination of factors related to an advanced field closure notice, including forecast snow for metro-Atlanta, sub-zero wind chill temperatures through Saturday creating an unsafe playing environment, and the likelihood of frozen fields creating unsafe playing conditions underfoot.

“A decision handed down by Cobb County Parks and Recreation closing all soccer fields in the county makes it very difficult for us to establish a sufficient number of alternate venues to reschedule the majority of the affected games. When combined with the possibility that many of the teams traveling from outside of metro-Atlanta in particular would face unsafe driving conditions, as well as the likelihood of unsafe playing conditions for the majority of games rescheduled through Saturday morning and early afternoon, the decision forces us to cancel this year’s event,” said Cobb FC Board of Directors President David Borgel. “We are deeply saddened by this action, but our hands are tied.”

The decision by Cobb County was based on their inspection of the fields which found them saturated with water. Likely freezing and later thawing of the ground on Saturday, along with the many games that are scheduled, could make the fields unplayable by Sunday. Under these circumstances, player safety was a contributing factor towards the decision to not permit Cobb FC the use of the county fields.

This year’s Classic was on track to be the club’s most successful effort to date with nearly 300 teams from Georgia and surrounding states. A decision regarding refunds will be made in the next few days.

“We wanted to get the word out as quickly as we could so that teams traveling and those with hotel reservations could act quickly.” said Cobb FC’s Director of Coaching and Tournament Chair Steve Gummer. “We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the County’s decision to close all fields. It is our hope that this early decision to cancel the tournament will allow for time to adjust schedules and eliminate unnecessary travel and expense.”

Wednesday training - parent meeting

I am waiting for confirmation that we will have indoor space at Parkview for Wednesday training. If we do not have space indoors, we will train in the Parkview parking lot, weather permitting.

We will have a brief parent meeting following our session tomorrow night, starting between 8pm and 8:15. We will meet in the GSA clubhouse.

We may not get indoor space until the last minute, so I appreciate everyone being flexible making late changes.

Finally, if you did not sign the tournament waiver form for the Cobb tournament, I must get your signature tomorrow so your son can play.

Cobb Classic Tournament schedule

We have been placed in the second division, which will be a good challenge for our team. Our first match will be against Dacula, one of the teams we played in the fall season. We will also have matches against teams from North and South Carolina.

Training this week + other matters

As a reminder, we will begin spring training on Monday, February 1 - tomorrow! - starting at 6:45 and running until 8:15.

Unfortunately, the GSA complex is not open until 2/8. Indoor space is not available on Monday, so we will have our session at the Parkview High parking lot.

I am hopeful that I will be able to secure indoor space for Wednesday, and should be able to update everyone on this tomorrow.

Our current schedule will provide us only 4 sessions for training prior to the Cobb Classic - therefore it is critical for all players to attend.

Upcoming training and tournaments

I was unable to secure indoor space on Tuesday or Wednesday due to winter league play.

Therefore, we will plan to train on Saturday morning from 9 to 10:30 as originally planned, weather permitting. We will use Bender field at GSA, or Arcado Elementary school - I will notify everyone later this week of our location.

We will have a prospective player working out with us during the session, so please make every effort to attend.

Finally, we have finalized our registration to play in the Cobb Classic on February 13-14 and Concorde on February 27-28.

Upcoming training & tryouts

Welcome back, and thanks to everyone for getting registered! I truly appreciate everyone cooperating with the shorter deadline put on us by Georgia Soccer.

We are looking to add two players to our roster for the spring season, and will be having a tryout session this Sunday afternoon, January 24, from 4pm to 5:30 pm.

Because it will be best for any prospective players to have a chance to interact with our team, I urge everyone to attend the session. I am waiting to obtain clearance from GSA that we will be allowed to use one of the complex fields, and will notify everyone of our location once it is finalized.

As everyone knows, we are to play in the Cobb Classic on February 13-14. To have an additional bit of training, Dave will have a session on Saturday, January 30, from 9 to 10:30 am.

Our regular weekly training will start the following Monday, February 1. We will be training on Mondays and Wednesdays this spring from 6:45 to 8:15 pm.

Let's keep our fingers crossed for a dry spring. See you all on Sunday.

Registration and pre-season tournaments

As a reminder, please make sure you register your player online by Thursday, as the state has required us to declare our team by Friday the 15th.

If you are having any trouble registering online, please contact me immediately and we can work through it.

Also, please note that we are currently planning to register to play in the Cobb tournament (February 13-14) and the Concorde tournament (February 27-28). These tournaments will be a great opportunity for our squad to get in sync before the regular season starts.

I have learned today that one of our players has a conflict with the Cobb dates and will not be available. Thus, before we commit to these tournaments, I need confirmation from all players regarding their availability for both tournaments. You can email me or call me to advise of your player's status, but I need to know by Friday.

Spring registration deadline -Important!

I received an email from the GSA registrar regarding the deadline for registration.

For unknown reasons, GYSA is requiring team declarations for U13 teams by January 15th.

Therefore, it will be necessary for all players to register by January 14th, even though GSA has a January 25th deadline.

If you believe you will have a problem registering before the 14th, please let me hear from you immediately.

Happy New Year!

GSA has opened registration for the spring season. Please register your player as soon as possible, but prior to Jan. 25th to avoid a late fee.

Go to the GSA homepage (www.gsasoccer.com), find the section on spring registration. You click on the link to register a select player and log into your sports affinity account. Once there you will see "create order" under your player's name - click on it and it will change to "payment/edit". Click on ''payment/edit", and from here you will follow the prompts to make a payment. Please note that you have to uncheck the $25.00 donation if you don't wish to pay it. Registration is $170.00.

You will need to register online even if paying by check.

If you have problems with registration let us know as soon as possible so we can trouble shoot.

Evaluations and end of season matters.

Dave has asked me to contact everyone to advise that after going through the evaluations, he felt he was much too tough on the boys on the numerical assessments. He has adjusted scores. (You should have received an email from zoomreports.com this morning notifying you that scores were posted.)

If anyone was unable to attend their evaluation on Monday or Wednesday, please let me hear from you by phone or email, and I will make arrangements for Dave to meet with you in January.

I will notify everyone when I obtain dates for registration for spring season, which should be the first week of January, if not before.

We are planning to register for the Cobb Classic pre-season tournament, which will take place the weekend of February 13-14, 2010.

I will be speaking with Dave after Christmas to determine our practice calendar and our return to practice date, and will advise everyone once it is finalized.

Although the fall has been very challenging from a scheduling standpoint, I must say that I appreciate all of you for being flexible and patient with all of the changes that had to be made.

The spring season will start on March 6, 2010. Mark your calendars!

More rescheduling - IMPORTANT!

Once again, the rain has caused problems for training and games.

Regarding training: Dave has advised me that his schedule changed today, and he will not be available to train on Friday. He has asked me to find out who can be available to train on Thursday, 12/3 at Parkview, instead of Friday's session. Conditions should dry sufficiently to allow for parking lot training.

Please let me know if your player will be available Thursday so I can relay to Dave how many can attend.

Our only other scheduled training session is next Wednesday, 12/9. I will notify everyone of our location as we get closer to the date.

Regarding games:

I have been advised that Miller, Schrader and Spencer fields are not expected to be in playable condition for the remainder of the season (through 12/13).

I am working to get our Tuesday match against AFU reset at TYSA. AFU does not have space next Tuesday to let us play.

I am not confident that we can get the match moved to TYSA, therefore I have asked the AFU manager to check on availability at their club for the remainder of the week. At this point, it appears unlikely that we will actually play next Tuesday, and will need to be open to another date next week if we are to get the game played.

We are still scheduled to play Norcross on Saturday, 12/12. Fortunately, we are set to play on Bender field, which should remain playable.

Our schedule now looks like this:

Training schedule for the rest of '09; Evaluations

Per my earlier emails, we are planning rescheduled games on Tuesday, Dec. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 12. Only the Dec. 12 match has been confirmed as rescheduled by GYSA thus far.

Our training schedule will be slightly modified between now and the 12th. We will plan to train on the following dates:

Wednesday, Dec. 2

Friday, Dec. 4

Wednesday, December 9

Please note that we will not train tonight, or next Monday, Dec. 7. Training times will run from 6:30 to 8pm unless alternate times are sent by email.

If the weather is clear on these dates but GSA is closed due to wet conditions, we will still train in the GSA parking lot or at Parkview. If the weather is poor, I will make every attempt to secure indoor space at the Soccer Academy in Lilburn.

Regarding evaluations: Dave has nearly completed player evaluations, and would like to conduct player/parent/coach meetings during the week of December 14th. Once he has finalized evaluations, you will have a chance to log on to your son's evaluation online and review it. I encourage you to review the evaluation with your son prior to the meeting with Dave.

Once we have settled on a location for the meetings, I will email a schedule with meeting times for each player. Time slots will likely be 10-15 minutes each, so you and your son will want to arrive prepared to discuss those topics of interest to you.

Please note that we will probably set the meeting at a local public library, which should allow for a quieter, less distracting setting than the clubhouse at GSA.

Macon Soccer Club is approximately 100 miles away. Please allow 2 hours travel time so our players have adequate time to warm up.

Directions to the Macon Soccer Club: Take I-285 south to I-675. Take I-675 south to I-75. Take I-75 south toward Macon and get on the I-475 bypass. Take Exit 3 and go west (turn right) on US Highway 80. Go about 1/2 mile and turn left onto Raley Road. After turning there should be a Goodwill Industries on your right. Go another 1/2 mile and Raley Road will make a sharp right. The complex is about 1/4 mile down on the left after the sharp right.

Alianza match - field status

I have just spoken to the Alianza manager regarding Saturday's field status.

Unfortunately, they do not have a hotline or website to update.

Their manager will speak with their field marshall after the field is inspected tomorrow morning around 7 am, and will call me to let me know if our match will be played or have to be rescheduled.

I was told that if the field is even the least bit playable, we will play. Therefore, assume we will play unless you hear from me or from Carolyn by telephone tomorrow morning.

GSA has rescheduled our picture time. The new time is Sunday, October 18th at 1:00 p.m. Since we do not have a game on Sunday, we will not be taking a team picture during this time, but you are welcome to get individual pictures taken.

We will take a team picture with NASA trophies prior to this Saturday's match against CGSA.

Our game schedule for AFU appears to be set.

We are the Home team against Imhotep at 1pm on Saturday. We will wear ALL RED for this match.

We are the Away team against AFU Silver at 5:30pm on Saturday. We will wear ALL WHITE for this match.

On Sunday morning, we are the Home team against Cannons at 8am. We will wear ALL RED for this match.

Should we make the finals, we will wear ALL WHITE.

Finally, please note that we will encounter the same single lane of traffic near the I-285/I-85 exchange that we had to navigate last week on the way to Columbus. I urge everyone to expect delays, and allow extra time to get our players to the field in time to get adequately warmed up.

Go south on I-85 to Newnan Exit(# 47)- Hwy. 34 / Bullsboro Drive.

On I-85 from the Virginia Ave. / Airport exit it will be approximately 25 miles.

At the I-285 / I-85 junction / connector on the southside it will be approximately 20 miles.

Turn left at the exit red light and go approximately 1.5 miles through 4 red lights (you will pass Wal-Mart on the right, Home Depot shopping center on the left). The fourth red light will be at the Yamaha Manufacturing plant on the left and the fields are visible from the street on the left just after that. Atlanta Fire Tournament - October 10th and 11th

We have space reserved at the Soccer Academy in Lilburn from 7 to 8:30, and will practice indoors on Monday.

Please note that it is critical that everyone contribute $5 toward rental of the space. Each time we practice indoors the team account covers the amount uncollected. The cushion the team has can only cover this a limited amount of times.

We are still actively trying to secure outdoor space. We hope that before Wednesday we will have a regular outdoor practice space locked in.

I have not heard from the AFU manager regarding our Saturday match. I am still hopeful we can get the match scheduled at the AFU complex, and will let everyone know when I have updated information.

GSA Field Damage - Cancelled games - IMPORTANT!!

Below is text from an email I received regarding damage to the GSA complex and the status of our matches this weekend. We were scheduled to play two games at home this weekend, which is no longer possible.

I will be working with the other clubs to see if it is possible to play our matches as away games, as both clubs (AFU and AYSA) are local. If their clubs have not sustained damage, we may be able to play this weekend if we have space. We run the risk of having to reschedule games very late into the season if we don't get them played now.

I am hopeful I will have more information at practice tonight.

GSA Sustains Major Flood Damage

Due to the torrential rains we've received over the past week and a problem with the bridge on Cole Drive, we suffered major damage to the complex earlier this week. This includes the loss of about 60% of the fence line, many goals damaged or swept away, damage to the bridge to Schrader Field and a great deal of silt and other debris deposited on the field.

The outpouring of support from everyone has been overwhelming. The offers of help have been pouring in from a large percentage of our membership as well as that of business partners and local leagues.

Our first goal is to protect the property and to get the damaged fence line repaired as soon as possible. We expect to have resources onsite by Wednesday, September 23rd to begin this process. We are also contacting outside resources to get recommendations on the most effective way to remove the silt from the fields without incurring major damage to the fields. Finally, many have offered to participate in a "clean up day" and we are actively considering this idea as soon as the fields begin to dry and we have input from experts on the best way to proceed.

In the meantime, we are confident that the fields will be closed through at least Wednesday, September 30th. We encourage teams to find alternate practice space during this time. All home games for the weekend of September 26 & 27 have been canceled. If you were schedule to play a team from outside the association at GSA this weekend, please contact them and explain the reason for the cancellation. If you are scheduled to play a game at a venue other than GSA, please make sure you confirm with the opposing team that your game is still on as there are many other venues that have sustained flood damage.

If you have any other questions, please contact your Age Group Commissioner for assistance. Thank you again for all your support and we hope to see everyone back on the field as soon as possible.

Hoodies - for those of you that ordered hoodies, I will hand them out tonight. They are $25.00 each.

We are looking into placing an order for team t-shirts. These will be white (so they can be worn for practice) with the GSA logo on front and the player number on the back. I will have more info on pricing by Wed. I also have the name of a lady who will do the logo on a baseball hat if you are interested in that let me know and I will give you more info.

Saturday match v. Inter Atlanta - POSTPONED!

Unfortunately, this Saturday's match against Inter Atlanta has had to be postponed.

I was contacted by the Inter Atlanta team manager yesterday and advised that they would not have enough players to field a squad at 6pm on Saturday. Therefore, we will not have a match on Saturday.

After communicating with the U13 age coordinator at Georgia Soccer, we will now try to reschedule the match for Sunday, September 20th, or Sunday, September 27th. The match will be played at GSA.

I need to hear from everyone about availability on both of these dates as soon as possible. I do not want to agree to reschedule a match on a date when we will be missing players. Please email me at wmoise@mac.com or call me at 404-274-6512 to advise me of your son's availability on these dates.

I am going to do a hoodie order. The hoodies are black and have the GSA logo in the front center and players number on the sleeve (same as many ordered last year). The cost is $25. They run a bit small and I have always found that hoodies tend to shrink up after a few washings, so I would recommend that you upsize them.

These are optional, no requirement to purchase one. Also, several of the parents ordered them last year. If you order a parent one you can get it with or without the number.

NASA Tournament - Times have changed!

As noted on the NASA Tournament home page, the start time for all Saturday games have changed. They will be delayed 90 minutes.

Thus, our start time for our first match will be at 12:30 pm instead of 11am, and our late match will start at 6:30 instead of 5pm. Locations have not changed.

NASA Tournament Issues - Potential Time Changes!

NASA is concerned that there may be some field changes and time changes. It is my understanding that they currently plan to update the website tonight about 7:00, and that early games may be moved to a later start time. I do not know what effect this will have on our start times, or if we will be moved to another location.

As a reminder, we will be playing matches at two different locations off Ashford Dunwoody Road.

Carolyn will be submitting another uniform order on or about August 10th, now that the warmup and the goalkeeper kit are available.

If you would like additional socks, a bag, a warmup, or any other part of the uniform kit, please do the following: 1) Contact Carolyn or me by email and let us know what pieces you want to order - we will tally the total and advise you of the amount due; or 2) Complete the uniform order form found on the GSA website and send it as an attachment to either of us by email.

Please note that we will not order gear unless we have received funds. Checks should be made out to GSA 97 PHOENIX BLACK. Do not make checks out to Eurosport.

The team website is now up and running. The web address is http://www.gsa97boysblack.lianas.net/. I will primarily be using the website to send announcements and team updates via email messages. Carolyn will be doing the same.

If you want to receive messages on multiple email addresses, you can add any additional email addresses under your profile. Please go on the site and play around and let your son do the same. As I indicated at the team meeting this week, we are hopeful this will be a team forum.

Anyone should be able to add photos. You may need to resize them so the files are not too big.

There is one glitch that the programmers are working on. If your email address was already added to another team’s site, it would not let me add you. They should have this fixed soon. However, in the meantime one suggested workaround is for you to create a new email address through your email provider and register as a new user on our site with this new address. You can then add other email addresses, including the one that you might have used on the other teams site to this new account. It has affected us, but I believe this problem is also impacting Coach Dave and the Nguyens. Please note that you can also have your cell phone added to receive announcements.

I am also going to send this same message via regular email. If you do not get it from my regular email (wmoise@mac.com) and the website email Gowan Moise noreply@lianascommunities.net , please check your spam filter to make sure it is allowing the website emails to make it through.
